Department Information

About the Special Education Cooperative

Serving the following school districts:  Flat Rock Community Schools, Gibraltar School District, Grosse Ile Township Schools, Huron School District & Riverview Community School District.

The Cooperative for Special Education Services provides a robust continuum of additional services and/or programs to ensure that all students eligible for special education are getting their educational needs met.  Special Education programs operate in accordance with all state and federal guidelines.  Special Education programs assist students with a variety of social, emotional and learning impairments.  Emphasis is placed on educating all students in traditional classrooms in their neighborhood school, to the maximum extent appropriate based on their individual needs.   All decisions regarding programs and placement are made by the Individualized Educational Program Team.  Parental involvement in the development as well as implementation is an integral part of programming.

Child Find

If you suspect that your child has a disability affecting their school performance, please notify your child’s teacher, counselor, principal, or the Special Education Office at (734) 379-6360.

Child Find identifies resident children ages birth through five years old as well as school-age children six years and up who may be in need of special education services.  Child Find offers evaluations to children suspected of having a disability at no charge.  Following the evaluation, eligible children are referred to appropriate programs and services.

Determination of Learning Disabilities

Gibraltar School District uses a Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses Process for the determination of a Specific Learning Disability for all buildings and grades in the district.  In making a determination as to whether a student has or continues to have a specific learning disability, Gibraltar School District will comply with all applicable federal regulations and State rules.
