Welcome Mr. Cassie!

Mr. Eric Cassie will be taking on the principalship at Shumate Middle School. He comes to us from Chapman Elementary school. Below please find an introductory letter from Mr. Cassie.

Dear Shumate Families,

It is with great pride and excitement that I send this letter to introduce myself and inform you that I have been selected as the next principal of Shumate Middle School. I am truly thrilled! During my time in the district, I've had the pleasure of getting to know many GSD families, and I look forward to meeting and getting to know every member of the Shumate community in the coming days, weeks and months.

Throughout the remainder of the school year, I will be visiting Shumate frequently, so if you see me around the school or around town, please stop and say hello. I plan to attend school functions and events when possible to learn the culture of the building and become better acquainted with the Shumate community.

Over the past three years, I have had the great privilege to serve as the principal of Chapman Elementary School. Prior to my time at Chapman, I spent fourteen years working with fifth through eighth grade students in Livonia Public Schools, teaching science, English, robotics, and intervention strategies at the middle school level. During the last eight years of my employment with LPS, I also served as the athletic director of Emerson Middle School and handled a large percentage of student discipline within the building.

I hold a Master's degree in Middle Level Curriculum and Instruction. I've also written middle level university course curriculum and mentored teachers pursuing middle level graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University. I hold a Middle Level State Certificate, a K-12 School Administrator Certificate, along with teaching certifications in Science and English. Needless to say, working with middle school students has always been very special to me. I'm so excited for this opportunity to once again be "in the middle" of it all!

Most importantly, I am the proud parent of two outstanding kids of my own. My daughter, Reese, is a sixth grader, and my son, Mason, is wrapping up his kindergarten year. They are the joys of my life and inspiration for my constant desire to improve the world of education for every student.

Shumate is an exceptional school and this opportunity is a dream come true. I've spent the better part of my adult life getting to this very point and I pledge to you my utmost support as we together navigate through these exciting and unique middle school years! I look forward to seeing you around Shumate!

Warmest Regards,

Eric Cassie
