Student Council Constitution
I. Purpose of the Shumate Student Council
The Shumate Student council represents the student body. Concerns of students can be brought to staff and administration’s attention by communicating through the Student Council.
Student council is committed to helping out the school in any way possible. Student council takes on fundraising for the school and for charities. It sponsors and organizes assemblies. The Student Council coordinates spirit events.
II. Selection of Representatives
In order to run for Student Council, a student must have a 2.5 grade point average. The student must receive recommendation by signature from 35 students and 3 staff members.
Eight delegates and two alternates will selected by election within each grade. Elections for the next school year will take place in the spring of the preceding school year.
III. Dismissal of representatives
Representatives must maintain a 2.5 grade point average. If GPA drops below 2.5, a representative will be placed on probation. If GPA remains below 2.5 after one marking period, the representative will be dismissed and replaced by an alternate.
Representatives who receive a suspension from school for disciplinary or attendance reasons will receive probation upon the first incident and dismissal upon the second. If the suspension is for longer than three days, the representative will be immediately dismissed.
The Student Council Advisor and school administration reserve the right to dismiss representatives from student council if considered appropriate.
IV. Responsibilities of Representatives
Representatives are to attend and participate in all meetings held on days in which they are present at school. They are expected to participate in any activity the council is involved in during the school day.
Representatives are expected to be prepared for meetings with materials and frame of mind conducive to productivity.
V. Responsibilities of Representatives Elected Officers
A. President
The President is responsible to lead meetings and act as a liaison between the council and advisor. The President is the only Representative who may call for a vote during a meeting.
B. Vice President
The Vice President takes on any responsibility of the President when the President is unavailable. The Vice President is also a liaison between the council and advisor.
C. Secretary
The secretary is responsible to take attendance and record minutes of each meeting. The secretary is also a liaison between the council and advisor.
VI. Approval
This constitution will take affect at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year. Amendments may be made if approved by a 3/4 vote of representatives.
We, the undersigned, approve this constitution for the 2008-2009 school year.
