**Each student will receive a glow stick at the door. Additional glow items will be available for purchase.**

Clarisa S., 7th grader, was the winner of the Pi Digit Memorization Contest this year.  She was able to memorize 236 digits of pi.  Congratulations, Clarisa!

Updated Vaccinations required for 6th Graders to Attend School in 2012-2013

Immunizations are an important part of your child’s health and Michigan law requires that children going to school be vaccinated to help prevent certain vaccine-preventable diseases. As the district school nurses, we are writing to inform you that the Michigan State Public Health Department requires vaccination updates at age 11 years.

Schools of Choice

The School of Choice Program allows the enrollment of non-resident students that reside in Wayne County.  Enrollments will be taken March 5 through September 7, 2012 for the 2012/2013 school year.   Mandatory documentation needed at the time of enrollment; Original Birth Certificate, Immunization Record,  3 Forms of Wayne County Residency Proof (utility, cable or phone bill, tax bill, lease, mortgage statement, insurance bill)  Secondary level students will also need a copy of their transcripts or last report card.  Special Education students will need a copy of their last IEP.

School breakfast provides 1/4 of your child’s daily nutrition needs and research shows breakfast provides fuel for school and boosts brain power. Breakfast at school is affordable, too. It’s available for all students and if you qualify for free or reduced price lunch, you also qualify for the free or reduced price breakfast.

Bus Information? Pick-up? Time?...this can be found at gibdist.net, then Click on Our District, Click on Bus Routes (located on Navigation Bar on left), Click on Bus Routes PDF file. Also have copies available in our office, office hours next week are Monday thru Wednesday 8am to 3:30pm. Office closed Monday 11:30am to 12:30pm for District In-Service.

Schedules? Changes in Schedules? Locker Assignment and Combination? Map?...All students will receive their new schedules, locker assignments and map during Advisory, 6th grade students will receive their information in cafeteria, as they report to cafeteria first thing on the 7th. Due to reduction in staff at SMS, schedules will not be changed unless there is an obvious error in student schedule. Many classes are at capacity and a few are over due to these changes in staff. Any and all changes must to addressed with Mr. Coon, Principal. Counselors have been instructed not to change any schedules as of August 30th.

Immunizations...6th grade students and students new to the district must have three new shots, they are; Tdap, Varicella, and Meningococcal. Students may bring these records to the office the first week of school.

New this year is an Activity/Athletic Fee for $50. This is a one-time fee per school year if your child is involved in more than one activity or athletic team. Some clubs will have additional cost (ex. ski club and bowling club). Any student participating in a Fall sport must pay Activity Fee in full before they can participate in any game or contest with another district team. Please make check or money order (NO CASH) payable to GSD. Check or money order must be paid in SMS office.
