Student of the Month

September 2011 Student of the Month - Justin Marshall
Each month the staff debates and votes on which student should earn the honor of being Student of the Month. The general criteria used is that the student is well-behaved, doing well academically and goes above and beyond the “basics” of being a good student. Usually, the student of the month displays school spirit and is involved in the school beyond just coming to school and doing class work. This month’s student has been a welcome enthusiastic addition to Downriver High School-Justin Marshall! Justin hails from the Romulus District. He is 18 years old and is a senior. He decided to come to Downriver High School so that he would be able to graduate on time. When he attended Bedford High School in Temperance, Michigan, his favorite teacher was science teacher, Mr. Muck, because he was a great teacher and really helped Justin. Here at DHS, Justin’s favorite teacher is Mr. Kirby. Justin stated, “He does not give up on me. He really helps me shoot for my goal.” Justin went on to say, “The staff [at DHS] is nice. I’m really doing awesome and I’m making my mom and dad proud.” Outside of school, Justin enjoys hanging out with friends and his girlfriend. When asked to give advice to other students, he said, “As long as you bite your tongue, do you work and come to school, you will pass by and make it through.”
October Student of the Month
By Ms. Mikolajczyk Students eagerly await to hear who won the Student of the Month each month. Not only does this student receive school-wide recognition, they also receive a certificate, their picture in the front hall display case, a feature in the newsletter and gift certificates to the movies! For the month of October, the selections were wide and worthy, but after the voting was done, Crystalynn Warren was the winner! As always, the staff had positive things to say about the winner. Mrs Lampe stated, “The senior class will truly miss Crystalynn. She worked hard in the senior store and has great pride in DHS.” Mrs. Ross added, “Crystalynn is very conscientious about her schoolwork.” Mr. Elswick summed it up best when he said, “She is a very nice and polite lady that is always a real pleasure to have in class, good luck this year and congratulations on graduating.” Crystalynn is 18 years old and hails from the Flat Rock Community School District. She came to DHS because she did not have enough credits to graduate on time. Here at DHS, Crystalynn’s favorite class is chemistry and her favorite teacher is Mr. Kirby. She said, “I like DHS because it has a lower amount of students and there is more one-on-one time with the students and teachers.” Outside of school, she enjoys hanging out with her friends, watching movies and doing anything fun. When asked, Crystalynn offered this advice, “Come to school every day and do your work.” Great job, Crystalynn Warren!
November Student of the Month
The young man selected as student of the month has been nominated each month since the beginning of the school year. He is now rewarded with the honor of being the November student of the month-Joseph Overholt! Mrs. Guizzetti said, “Joe is hard working, has made the honor roll all three terms, always turns in his rubrics and has great attendance. He also is just a nice kid and I enjoy having him in my class.” Mr. Elswick added, “He always puts forth a great effort and is always a pleasure to have in class.” Joe is 14 years old and is currently in the DHS self-contained 8th grade program run by Leslie Guizzetti. He came from the Gibraltar School District. He thinks that math is easy, so it is his favorite subject. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Guizzetti because he sees her during the majority of the school day. His favorite aspect of the DHS program is that he has no homework. Joe enjoys working on his car when he is not in school. His advice to other Downriver students is simple: “Don’t get in trouble. Do your work.” Congratulations, Joe Overholt!
