Summer 2011 Parent Letter

Dear Parents:

I hope this letter finds you enjoying the summer, while gearing up for yet another school year.  As your Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, I am committed to make this year a valuable and rewarding experience for each student at Shumate Middle School. Students who wish to participate in our interscholastic athletic program need to be aware of a few items prior to the fall sport season:

  • Again this year, an activity fee of $50.00 will be charged to each student participating in any Shumate extracurricular activity. This is a ONE TIME charge for the entire school year, regardless of the number of activities in which students are involved. More info provided at parent meetings.
  • Each student interested in participating in a school sponsored sport must have a current physical examination on file with the school.  Doctors should use the form provided in this packet.  Please be sure that both sides of the form are completely filled out.  Physicals performed on or after April 15, 2011 are considered up-to-date and will be good for the entire 2011/12 school year.  Students will not be allowed to tryout, practice, or play without an up-to-date physical.
  • Volleyball - A parent meeting will be held once the teams have been chosen.  Also, included in this packet is tryout information for any 7th or 8th grade girls interested in playing volleyball this fall.
  • Cheer - Tryouts for sideline cheerleading have already been held.  There will be a parent meeting in September for all parents and members of this squad.
  • Middle School Football is a no cut sport.  Therefore, all students interested in trying out for either the 7th or 8th grade football teams are asked to attend an informational meeting on Monday, August 22, 2011The meeting will take place in the Shumate cafeteria and will begin at 6:00PM. Practice will begin on the following day, Tuesday August 23rd. At least one parent of each student trying out is required to attend.  Completed physicals should be brought to this meeting.
  • Cross Country kicks off after school begins in the fall.  Questions may be directed to Ms. Gregorich-Filkins at gregork@gibdist.net or Ms. Harhold at harholj@gibdist.net.

Also, all athletic forms and schedules can be found @ www.gibdist.net

Students entering the sixth grade are not eligible to participate in the Middle School Athletic Program.
