Foreign Language Courses
German I
German I is designed to familiarize students with the German language: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. Everyday terms and expressions are learned. Students also learn the cultural history of German speaking nations and the influence they have had on our language and heritage.
1 st Semester: Introduction of self, greetings, names, addresses, phone numbers
2 nd Semester: Visiting friends and family, seasons, months, days, talking about the weather, definite articles, cases for nouns, eating out in Germany, popular foods, modal auxiliary verbs, clothes, shopping in Germany, currency-euros, colors, future tense, celebrating special occasions-birthdays, vowel change, verbs, commands
German II
German II is designed to improve upon the conversational skills and comprehension skills of the student. Simple literature is studied as well as grammar and writing necessary for fluency in the language.
1 st Semester: Past tense verbs, traveling, means of transportation, adjectives and adverbs, reflexive verbs, accusative and dative cases, Grimm’s fairytales, vacations, pets and animals
2 nd Semester: Famous German vacation spots, where Germans live, homes, rooms, furniture, past tense modal auxiliary verbs, infinitives used as nouns, prepositions and prepositional phrases, eating in a restaurant, der words, genitive case
German III
German III continues to build language skills through vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, expanded grammar concepts and oral communication. Emphasis will be total communication in the target language. Culture and literature will be used as the textual basis.
Review of German II, introduction of additional verbs, subordinating clauses and subjunctive forms, mastery of various concepts presented, topic projects. For reading and comprehension actual text such as Grimm’s fairytales, newspapers, short stories, poetry and plays will be read.
German IV
German IV is an honors class. Students review grammar and writing, and then do an in-depth study of literature. Independent study habits are a necessity.
Student Learning Objectives/Assessments: Skills are assessed through reading, writing, and speaking.
Introduction to German literature and literary forms: discussion and writing topics based on readings and films.
This class is designed to promote independent and small group learning and requires students to be self-motivated and responsible learners.
Spanish I
Spanish I is a beginning study of the Spanish language and its cultures. From verbs to nouns, music to history, Spanish I encompasses it all. It introduces students to the language, cultures, history, and music of the Spanish speaking peoples.
Basic Units of Study: Spanish I will cover the following topics throughout the year: Accurate pronunciation, basic vocabulary, verbs in the present tense, geography of Spanish speaking countries, communication (oral; written), hispanic holidays, cultures and traditions. Other topics such as the alphabet, numbers, colors, food, sports, body parts, etc. are also covered in detail.
Spanish II
Spanish is an intermediate study of the Spanish language and its cultures. From verbs to nouns, music to history, Spanish II encompasses it all on a broad scale. It continues to introduce students to the language, cultures, history, and music of the Spanish speaking peoples.
Basic Units of Study: Spanish II will cover the following topics throughout the year: Accurate pronunciation, intermediate vocabulary, verbs in the present tense, past tense and the imperfect, geography of Spanish speaking countries, communication (oral and written), Hispanic holidays, cultures and traditions. Other topics such as commands, present progressive tense, numbers, body parts, food, etc. are also covered in detail.
Spanish III
The course is an advanced in-depth exploration of the Spanish language. Students are introduced to the imperfect, future, and conditional tense, and explore more in depth the preterite tense. Students are required to make oral presentations, create written reports, and read authentic literature in the target language.
Basic Units of Study: Spanish III will cover the following objectives: Review of preterite and introduction of imperfect, subjunctive, future, conditional, and various vocabulary. Previously learned skills will be reinforced through oral and written activities.
Spanish IV
The course is an advanced in-depth exploration of the Spanish language. Students are introduced to the subjunctive tense and explore more in depth the imperfect, future, conditional tense, and preterite tense. Students are required to make oral presentations, create written reports, and read authentic literature in the target language. Class emphasizes written literature and oral listening.
Basic Units of Study: Spanish IV will cover the following objectives: Review of imperfect, subjunctive, future, conditional, and preterite. Previous learned skills will be reinforced through oral and written activities.
